Comedic monologues
It isn’t at all easy to touch down on the best audition of the season
but it is even more difficult to finalize the right comedic monologues if that’s what you’ve been assigned for your acting session.
Getting comedic monologues right is an art in itself because the
monologues have to be chosen with a great deal of care. Otherwise, it may end up crappy or crass which would spoil the impact intended by comedic
monologues.
To start with, you should avoid choosing a monologue that is long and
winding because it wont give you enough scope to do justice to the character as well as ensure that your presentation propels the precise effect.
So, choose a dialogue that sounds short and sweet. You can think of the different ways to treat your voice and the manner of saying these words
while your practice sessions go on.
It is also a good idea to get tips from experienced others who are
proficient when it comes to handling comedic monologues that they are comfortable handling with ease.
For self motivation, jot down the comedic monologues of some of your
favorite actors and try replaying them in your mind to see how you would render them and whether it is just as good.
Comedic monologues are different for men and women so you have to be
aware of what levels of differences exist. You shouldn’t simply read off the monologue bit and then immediately rehearse. The importance lies in
understanding the story plot, the central characters and your own character so that you can visualize how the plot would come to life and how
your character would say the words that do justice to the character’s own nature.
For these reasons, it is important to also be aware of the background
context in which your character is stating or saying the words alongwith its dynamic interactions with other characters in the play. Your comedic
dialogues shouldn’t signal an emotional journey but a wit filled one that keeps a balance with the role you have taken.
Don’t forget your lines so just practice till you can say it in your sleep. Let your loved
ones rate your performance and give you tips to improve the impact of the comedic dialogues.
