2 minute monologues

Finding the right 2 minute monologues for audition is a pretty daunting job when you know for a fact that monologues have to be chosen with a great deal of care and sensitivity to the character you wish to present. When you have decided to perform for an audition monologue, you would be better off if you manage to say something that would be short as well as crisp. This way, you would be able to render complete justice to your character so that your rendering wouldn’t be too dramatic or too theatrical.

Another good idea is to be thorough with the script itself so that you understand quite clearly how and why your character responds or talks the way it presently does. When you simply present a monologue that is picked off randomly, you tend to lose the essence of the character you intend to present because you don’t anything about the central theme or the story plot or the other characters to which your character also responds. It is essential for you to have a clear understanding about the story, the background facts as well as the context in which you are delivering your carefully chosen 2 minute dialogues. You should make it a point to read the whole play or story so that your understanding is in depth.

Let’s take the example of Jenny, who is a teenage girl in the famous movie, Dying Light. Jenny is dying of cancer but she is a very positive, smart and bubbly girl who cant express negativity in any way. Let’s say you have to say the following monologues that are imaginary and inspired from the movie:

That's what the doctors said…..cancer. Dreadful. I cant believe they are talking about me. It’s now stuck in my head but all I can wish is that I could attend the prom like Katie and Bess. Why did the tumor have to come just before my prom? It doesn’t even sound cool to say but everybody will stay away from me now. I am unlucky that I wont probably live to see the prom, the dancing and making out. I feel like some silly character in an alien beast kind of an outfit now. Practice the tone of Jenny’s words and even the meaningful pauses. Let’s hope your confidence increases as you go ahead.
